The Red Studio by Henri Matisse is significant in understanding how to work in a surreal way because his use of block colour reduces the walls, floor and ceiling to one uniform colour, which flattens the perspective gained by the objects within the space and therefore appearing to alter reality. The influence of depicting reality in this way derives from being exposed to early 1900 Islamic art, but Matisse used colour in this way to porject his personal reality: the world as he percieved it.
